"Interruption" | Contemporary Abstract Art | Devin Abrams

"Interruption" | A contemporary abstract painting by Devin Abrams

I never know what's going to happen when I start a new painting. A lot of different factors go into the creative process. This piece is a large acrylic painting on heavy canvas, gallery wrapped on hand made canvas stretchers with blacked out edges; it's dimensions are 48 x 42 x 1.5.

I only meant to spend a little time on this painting, but a day stretched into a week and the artistic train of thought I was following was lost. At some point while painting this piece of artwork, I lost control and the art took over compelling me to spend many hours honing the lines and curves into as perfect a shape as I could. And simultaneously trying to keep the colors balanced. It reminds me of changing a flat tire somehow; tightening it up slowly and in a star pattern. I don't often spend much time striving for perfection; instead I let the art form it's own details. "Interruption," however; dominated my focus and I became somewhat obsessed with fixing it over and over, until it became what you see here.

This piece was struggle and a distraction. The act of overcoming the difficulties involved in finishing it is communicated in the final piece. It is an accomplishment, and a sense of fulfillment in the face of obstacles. "Interruption" is about overcoming distraction through focus and diligence.
